Overview

The history of the Computer Science and Technology Major of Harbin Engineering University can be traced back to the Controller and Computer Major of the Naval Engineering Department of the PLA Military Institute of Engineering, known as "Harbin Military Engineering", which was established in 1960. In 1958 and 1964, it achieved significant milestones by successfully developing China’s first military electronic computer, "901 Torpedo Boat Controller", and the first batch of "441-B Series Computers" using domestically produced transistors. In 1966, the Electronic Computer Department, also known as the Sixth Department, was established within "Harbin Military Engineering." In 1970, the Computer Major at Harbin College of Shipbuilding Engineering (referred to as “Harbin Shipbuilding College”) was established on the basis of the Computer Department of the former “Harbin Military Engineering”. With undertaking major scientific research projects as the background, the Computer Department has successfully developed 277B Aircraft and Haiying-II Missile Controller, both of which have won the 1978 National Science Conference Award. In 1975, the "Harbin Shipbuilding College" established the Computer and Information Science Department, which led to the subsequent creation of the Computer and Application Major and the Computer Software Major. In 1982, The Sixth Department of “Harbin Shipbuilding College” was renamed from the Computer Science and Technology Department to the Computer and Information Science Department.

In 2001, the College of Computer Science and Technology at Harbin Engineering University received relevant approvals and was established. In terms of the comprehensive level of discipline construction, the college ranks among the top universities in the country, with the discipline of Computer Science reaching the top 1% globally in 2019.

In 2008, the College of Software at Harbin Engineering University was officially approved for establishment. In 2021, it was approved as one of the first batches of the Characteristic Pilot College of Software. The college leverages its unique "Ship and Sea" characteristics and its advantageous disciplinary focus, taking large-scale ship industry software as the key point, setting characterized software talent cultivation as its goal, taking deep academia and industry collaboration as the key point to improve the quality of software talents. College of Software has forms the characteristics of “Shipbuilding Field Oriented, Theoretical and Practical Combined, In-depth Academic-Industry Cooperation, and Multi-dimensional Collaborative Education”.

In order to meet the urgent needs of specialized and security professionals in facing new situations and tasks, the College of National Secrecy at Harbin Engineering University was established in 2010, which is the first national secrec college with a science and technology background. The College of National Secrecy offers an undergraduate program in Information Security and is dedicated to cultivating versatile classified with a strong understanding of the law, technical expertise, and effective management skills. Information Security major was designated as a key specialty in the National Defense "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" in 2007. In 2010, the College of National Secrecy of Harbin Engineering University was honored as the Harbin Sub-base of National Secrecy Education and Training Base.

Discipline Construction

After years of construction and development, the College of Computer Science and Technology, the Characteristic Pilot College of Software, and the College of National Secrecy formed a trinity, with 3 undergraduate majors: Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, and Information Security; 2 doctoral programs in first-class disciplines, namely Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering; 1 doctoral program in second-class discipline of Network Security Technology and Engineering, which is excluded from designated categories.

Furthermore, the college hosts a postdoctoral research mobile station in Computer Science and Technology, as well as two master’s degree programs in first-class disciplines: Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering. It also offers engineering master programs in the field of electronic information. All three undergraduate programs – Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, and Information Security – have received engineering education certification. These majors, Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, and Information Security, have been approved as “National First-class Majors”. Additionally, all three undergraduate majors of the college have been included in the “Double Ten Thousand Plan” Specialty Construction List, which encompasses both national and provincial first-class undergraduate programs.

Research Achievements

Aiming at the major strategic needs of the country such as “intelligence, digitization, networking, autonomy, and e-governance” and adhering to the characteristics of national defense, the college has formed significant advantages and characteristics in the Next-Generation Internet Technologies and Security, Shipbuilding Industry Software, Internet of Things and Trusted Computing, Social Network and Intelligent Information Processing, Big Data and Knowledge Engineering, and other disciplines, positioning themselves at the international forefront or an advanced level. The college takes the lead in undertaking major science and technology plan projects including those from the Ministry of Science and Technology's National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation Key Projects, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's major engineering projects. It has published over a thousand high-quality academic papers and has been recognized with several awards, including one second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award, one first-class National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award, and numerous provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress awards.
